Digital marketing for contractors · a plain‑English guide

Digital marketing for contractors: what to do first, and what to skip

Contractor digital marketing isn't one thing. It's eight channels, and most remodelers pay for the wrong one first. This guide puts them in order: what each one does for a remodeler, when to start it, and what to watch out for.

The order that worksGuide
1 · Plug the leaks Follow‑up, reviews
2 · Fix the storefront Profile, website
3 · Turn up demand SEO, then ads
4 · Measure jobs Not traffic
Most money is lost in step 1, and most marketing budgets go to step 3.

01 · Before you spend a dollar

More leads won't help a business that leaks them

Think of your business as a bucket. Ads and SEO pour water in. These four leaks let it out. Fix them first, and every dollar you spend after that works harder.

More leadsAds, SEO, referrals

Signed jobsWhat makes it through

  1. 1

    Estimates nobody follows up

You did the drive, the measuring and the pricing. Then it went quiet, and the job went to whoever was still there on day ten.

    Booked: estimate follow‑up
  2. 2

Old leads and past clients nobody calls

Hundreds of people who already know you, sitting in your phone, your inbox and old spreadsheets.

    Booked: old leads brought back
  3. 3

Happy customers who never leave a review

They meant to. Nobody reminded them. Homeowners pick the remodeler with more recent reviews.

    Booked: review requests
  4. 4

Calls and forms that wait until tonight

You're on a ladder when the phone rings. By the time you call back, they've hired someone.

    Booked: instant replies and text‑back

Plug the leaks first. Then turn up the tap. How Booked plugs them

02 · The channels

Eight channels, in the order we'd tackle them

What each one does for a remodeler, when to start it, and the mistake to avoid.

  1. 1

    Google Business Profile

    Free · do it first
    What it does
Puts you on the map when homeowners search for your work nearby. It is where many local calls start.
    Start it
Now. Categories, services, photos of finished jobs, and hours that are right.
    Watch out
Never put keywords in your business name. It breaks Google's rules and can get the profile suspended.
  2. 2

    Reviews

    Free · every job
    What it does
Builds trust, and Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking.
    Start it
After every finished job, with one reminder for the ones who forget.
    Watch out
Ask every customer, not just the happy ones. Filtering who gets asked breaks Google's review rules.
  3. 3

    Follow‑up

    Where most jobs are lost
    What it does
Turns the leads and estimates you already have into signed jobs.
    Start it
Before you spend more on getting leads. A fast first reply, then check‑ins on every estimate.
    Watch out
Texts only to people who agreed to them, and a way to opt out in every first text.
  4. 4

    Your website

    Your storefront
    What it does
Decides whether a homeowner calls after they find you. Project photos, process, price ranges and an easy way to reach you.
    Start it
When it looks older than your work or loads slowly on a phone.
    Watch out
A pretty site with no clear next step on each page.
  5. 5

    Local SEO

    Builds over months
    What it does
Brings calls from Google search and the map for the services and towns you want, without paying per click.
    Start it
Once your profile and follow‑up are in place. Results build over months, not weeks.
    Watch out
Anyone who guarantees rankings, or builds dozens of town pages with only the name swapped.
  6. 6

Google Ads and Local Services Ads

    Fast, paid
    What it does
Calls this month for the searches you choose, while SEO builds.
    Start it
When you need calls soon and you know what a job is worth to you.
    Watch out
Google charges for some missed Local Services Ads calls, so answering matters even more.
  7. 7

Your past clients and old estimates

    The list you already own
    What it does
A seasonal offer to people who already know you often books work faster than any new channel.
    Start it
Each season, starting with your slow months.
    Watch out
Email everyone, but text only those who agreed to texts.
  8. 8

    Social media

    Trust, not leads
    What it does
Shows homeowners you are active and real, and gives referrals something to look at.
    Start it
A steady trickle of finished‑job posts is enough.
    Watch out
Expecting it to fill your calendar. For most remodelers it supports trust more than it brings calls.

03 · A 90‑day plan

What to do in your first 90 days

  1. Days 1 to 14

    Plug the leaks

Fix your Google Business Profile, switch on an instant reply to every inquiry, start following up every estimate, and ask your last 20 customers for a review.

  2. Days 15 to 45

    Fix the storefront

Make every page of your website end with a clear next step, add your best project with photos and the story behind it, and show price ranges for your main service.

  3. Days 46 to 90

    Turn up the demand

Start the service and town pages homeowners actually search for, run a seasonal offer to your past clients, and decide whether you need ads for calls this month.

04 · How to measure it

Track jobs, not traffic

Traffic and rankings are only worth something if they turn into these four numbers. Ask any agency to report them.

Number 1

Calls and forms

How many new inquiries came in, and from where.

Number 2

First reply time

How fast each one heard back from you.

Number 3

Estimates booked

How many turned into a site visit.

Number 4

Estimates won

How many signed, and what they were worth.

05 · If you'd rather have it done for you

Questions

Questions about digital marketing for contractors

How much should a contractor spend on digital marketing?

Work backwards from one job. If a typical job leaves you $7,800 of gross profit (a midrange bathroom at a 29.9% margin, from Cost vs Value 2025 and NAHB 2026), one extra job a year pays for most small plans. Spend where you lose the most first: usually follow‑up, then your profile and website, then SEO and ads.

What should I do first?

Fix your Google Business Profile and your follow‑up. They cost little or nothing, and they make every other channel work better. More traffic into a business that misses calls and forgets estimates just loses more jobs. The order we use for remodelers, step by step: how to get remodeling leads.

Is social media worth it for contractors?

For trust, yes. For leads, rarely on its own. Post finished jobs and reviews regularly, and put your effort into the channels that bring calls. Paid Facebook ads are a different question: our post on Facebook ads for contractors covers when they work.

Should I buy leads from Angi or HomeAdvisor?

They can fill gaps, but shared leads often go to several contractors at once, and the fastest reply usually wins. Leads from your own profile, website and past clients aren't shared and keep working after you stop paying. Lead generation for contractors

How long does digital marketing take to work?

Follow‑up and reviews can help within weeks, because they work on leads you already get. SEO builds over months. Ads bring calls as soon as they run, and stop when you stop paying. The SEO part in detail: SEO for contractors, the guide.

Can I do this myself?

Much of it, yes, especially your profile, reviews and a first follow‑up. The free Missed Jobs Test shows you what to fix first, and plenty of owners take it and do the first steps themselves. If you would rather hand it over, here is what a contractor marketing agency should do.
